Speculative Graduate Applications
Another way to find a graduate job is to tap into the hidden job market by making speculative applications to employers in your field of interest. This works best for small to medium sized businesses that do not have a formal application process and recruitment schedule.
Speculative applications tend to have a relatively low response rate as many of the employers simply have no vacancies at the time. However, if you do manage to contact an employer who is considering a new hire, but has yet to advertise a vacancy, then you will face less competition and have your foot already in the door.
Even if you do not receive a response, the employer may keep your CV on file until an appropriate job becomes available.
Below are some tips to help maximise your success with speculative applications:
1. Write to a named person if possible. People take more notice of letters addressed to them rather than letters which say 'Dear Sir/Madam'.
2. Mention that it is a speculative application and give your specific reasons for applying.
3. State the particular role you are looking for and what you are currently doing.
4. Explain why you are interested in the industry and how you can add value to their firm.
5. Highlight relevant information from your CV that is of particular interest.
6. Include specific information about the company to show that you have done some research before applying.
7. Be clear and concise.
8. Refer the reader to your CV.
Keep in mind that the quality of your covering letter will determine whether your CV will be read. Make sure you customise rather than sending out the same cover letter to everyone - you need to make the reader feel the application was only sent to them.
